Expert conservation and technical support for media art.
CMACC provides conservation and technical services for media art across the full lifecycle of an artwork, from acquisition through exhibition and long-term stewardship. Our work brings together hands-on treatment, research, and close collaboration with artists, collectors, and institutions to support responsible, sustainable care.
-
We work directly with artists to support media artworks at key moments of transition, including acquisition, commissioning, first-time institutional presentation, and estate transition. Our role often involves helping artists articulate how a work functions, what it requires to be shown and sustained, and how technical and conservation considerations can be addressed responsibly. By translating between artist intent, technical realities, and institutional expectations, we help alleviate uncertainty for collectors and museums while ensuring the work is prepared for long-term care.
-
We assess and document entire media art collections held by institutions, private collectors, and estates to establish a clear picture of condition, risk, and preservation needs. Surveys result in actionable recommendations that support prioritization, budgeting, and long-term planning.
-
We conduct in-depth evaluations of individual artworks, examining components, media formats, dependencies, and installation and storage requirements. These assessments support acquisition, loan, exhibition, and conservation decision-making for institutions, collectors, and artists.
-
We provide hands-on conservation treatment for time-based media artworks, addressing issues ranging from hardware failure and software instability to physical wear and environmental damage. Treatment plans are developed in close dialogue with artists and stakeholders, with an emphasis on documentation, reversibility, and long-term sustainability. All conservation treatment is carried out in accordance with the ethical standards of the American Institute for Conservation, prioritizing responsible decision-making and long-term stewardship.
-
We help artists, their estates, and foundations bring order and stability to studio archives distributed across legacy drives and removable media. Services include data migration, storage and backup planning, and archive assessment, resulting in systems that support both daily studio use and long-term preservation. Our approach emphasizes sustainability, clarity, and workflows that align with the artist’s practice.
-
We collaborate with artists and institutions to plan and execute the installation of media artworks, from early design through on-site setup. Our work integrates conservation concerns with exhibition realities, ensuring technical fidelity, reliability, and safe operation in public-facing contexts.
-
We recover data from obsolete, damaged, or unstable digital storage media, including legacy hard drives, optical media, and removable formats such as floppy disks, zip disks, and tapes. Recovery workflows are documented and designed to preserve both data integrity and evidentiary context.
-
We build capacity across the field through tailored workshops and one-on-one mentorship. Programs are designed for conservators, technicians, and collection care professionals working with time-based and media art in real-world settings.
The services listed above reflect common areas of our work, but they are not exhaustive. If you have a media artwork or collection need that isn’t listed here, we encourage you to get in touch to discuss how CMACC may be able to help.
